My eyes fluttered open, and a wave of nausea swept over me, rising from the pit of my stomach like a dark tide. My head spun, my throat parched, and the room tilted when I tried to move. A sharp pain twisted through my lower belly, and I groaned, curling onto my side. What was wrong with me?

I pulled the blanket up higher, closed my eyes, and let out a slow breath. Just go back to sleep, I told myself. It's nothing. But then it came again. This time it wasn't a gentle ache. It was a sharp, grabbing pain that wrapped around my entire lower belly like a fist clenching tight. I gasped, my hand flying to my stomach. The pressure built, hard and unyielding, pressing down like something was pushing against my insides from the inside out. I couldn't breathe for a second. I just lay there, frozen, my fingers digging into my belly, waiting for it to pass.

The golden envelope dropped from my numb fingers, fluttering to the polished marble floor. I stared down in complete horror as a sharp, agonizing pain ripped through my lower stomach. It felt like a hot blade twisting inside me, pulling all the air directly out of my lungs. "Brandon!" I screamed, clutching my abdomen as my knees gave out.
