“I’m not sure. I did nothing for five years, refusing to write anything, and my life only worsened. Drinking, nightmares all the time, until I gave in after what happened with Emma, gave myself to it and started writing. And now the nightmares have gone away and I’ve stopped drinking.
“And they’re true? These stories really happened? That’s what you’re saying?”
He shrugs. “According to that boy . . . it’s my gift, or my curse, depending on how you look at it. Or, maybe I hallucinated the whole experience in Portsmouth and maybe coming so close to death flipped a switch in my head so now I’m receiving these stories, like I’m an antenna for them, or something. Or maybe it’s a little of both. T
