And they were definitely from the library. I recognised all the titles immediately, could even almost remember exactly where they would be placed on the shelves. He pulled out a small, rectangular package wrapped in brown paper. "Here," Elion said. "The real gift." Cale looked at it. He didn't touch it. "I did not authorize an expenditure," Cale said. "I used my royalty check. Open it." Cale picked up the package. He weighed it in his hand. "Light," Cale said. "Rectangular. Hard cover." "Just open it." Cale tore the paper. It was a book. A blank journal. Leather-bound, navy blue, with thick, cream-colored pages. And a pen. A heavy, expensive fountain pen.

I sighed inwardly and remembered the gift upstairs that I'd bought him during the shopping trip with Lory. "Give me a minute. I have something for you." I went up, picked it up from Lory's room while she was in the bathroom, and came back down to hand it to him. It was a book on how to deal with grief. I'd found it in the bookshop at the mall, wandering around while Lory was off getting the fashion ring she bought adjusted. He turned it over in his hands. A small smile tugged at his mouth. "Thank you."

A delivery every hour, it seemed. Gift number eight: a first edition of a classic fashion photography book. Gift number nine: a beautiful silk scarf in shades of blue and silver. Gift number ten: 28 letter expressing how he felt the first day he met me. Gift number eleven: A magazine about me with pictures. Gift number twelve: a gourmet chocolate assortment. Gift number thirteen: a subscription to a prestigious international fashion magazine. Gift number fourteen: a delicate silver bracelet. Each gift was clearly expensive, and felt incredibly personal.

How would I ever repay Sebastian for this? These books were invaluable to me, and it meant so much that he went to such lengths to get them for me. Swallowing my ego, I walk out of my room and head to his. I needed to thank him for this precious gift in person. A text just wouldn’t do.
