“If she’s meeting who I think she is, you won’t like what you find.” The line clicked off. I glanced back once through the glass façade of the café. Celeste was laughing again, her eyes bright with something I hadn’t seen in years—hope. I memorized that image, because I knew what waited on the road ahead wouldn’t look anything like hope. I slid behind the wheel, the tracker pulsing on the map like a heartbeat. The countryside blurred past in streaks of gold and green as I followed the blinking dot on my screen. Ten minutes out of town, the narrow road curved through fields.

And I didn’t want to slow down. We were driving along the Hope River. This was my favorite part of town. It didn’t matter where you were, there was a great view of the river. I was busy watching the way the moonlight glinted off the water when Jack pulled into a parking lot and turned the car off. We were at the end of Riverview Drive, in front of a darkened building. To the left, a string of businesses, from Downtown Books to that little Sushi place Cat dragged me to sometimes. To the right, the Hope River.

“We’re on a highway, I think. There’s a mile marker sign coming up. Says 120. Lots of trees. Sun is setting on my left over some mountains. Oh, I see that peak that looks like a baby’s bottle.” “A baby’s bottle?” I could hear James muffling the mouthpiece and shouting at someone in the background. “Okay, good, Addie. Can you make out another peak to the left? Looks kind of like a scythe?” I looked. “Yeah, I think so. Hey, James? The road is really curvy. Does that help?” “Yeah, Addie, it does. I think you’re on the old Spiral Highway. We’re heading your way.”

The silence that followed was broken by a soft, rhythmic clicking. They all turned to see Hope sitting in the corner. She wasn't playing. She was using a piece of obsidian to scratch something into the wooden floorboards. "Hope?" Clara asked, kneeling beside her. Julian looked down. Hope hadn't scratched a picture. She had scratched a series of numbers and dots. It wasn't Continuity code. It was... "Short-wave coordinates," Clara whispered, her breath catching. "And a timestamp."
