I stepped inside and heard a bell jingle at the top of the door. "Happy Christmas," a cheerful voice called out. I would bake at Aunt Marie's tomor- row, and I looked forward to that. I loved to cook, but it lost something when there was nobody to cook for. I felt a sigh coming and suppressed it. I gravitated toward a section of soft knits. These were obviously a consign- ment of some sort. Not antiques. “I would have taken you to your own room to change, but I didn’t want to get interrupted by Hannah or anyone else.” I gingerly pull my arms through the soft, baby blue material. It’s cashmere, I can tell. My father used to have a sweater just like this one and wore it when the weather had even the slightest hint of a bite in the air. The sweater hangs nearly to my sides but the warmth penetrates my skin within seconds. And seconds is all I have because Isaac clasps his hand around mine and yanks me toward the door, and we’re off at the speed of light.

Guess we could’ve gone in mine after all. Next she took me to the cutest outdoor Christmas market I had ever seen. There we bought tons of ornaments and lights … a tree skirt.. and other decorations for our room. My favorite find? An ugly Christmas sweater of my own. In fact I bought three. We also found many gifts there. I got presents for Sel and Leslie and our boss at work. Then I got one for Breck and Emily and Lauren. Next I found something for Rachel and even mom, dad, and Cristoff. Lastly .. a toy for my baby brother.

I picked it up, flipping it to examine it. “That looks ominous.” I failed to see the Christmas charm in it. “It's an invitation,” Tyler revealed. I raised a brow. “To what? Some Goth Christmas party?” Tyler let out a low chuckle, stepping further inside with casual strides like he owned the place. “Some annual Christmas party hosted by some high school seniors apparently.“ So it could be goth. I quirked up a brow, waiting for the punchline of his joke. “You're joking.“

I sat cross-legged on her bed, my back to the wall, scrolling aimlessly through my phone while she held up two sweaters in front of the mirror. “Red or green?” she asked, pressing the red one to her chest, then switching to the green. “Red is festive. Green is… I don’t know, classy? Sophisticated?” I tilted my head, considering. “Red. You’re festive. Green would make you look like you’re trying too hard to be mysterious, and you’re terrible at mysterious.” She laughed, tossing the green sweater onto the growing pile on her chair. “Red it is. Dad always says I look like a Christmas ornament in red, but he smiles when he says it, so I know he secretly loves it.”

And none of those answers sounded like an answer to me. I half-heartedly got dressed for work. We were supposed to be taking a holiday photo today, and I had a cute reindeer antler headband and a Christmas sweater picked out, but I wasn’t excited to wear them. I tugged them on anyway along with a pair of jeans and some warm booties that Gretchen had gotten me for my birthday.
