"Purchased with cash, no digital trail."
Michael arrived minutes later, looking like a man who'd aged a decade in hours. His eyes were red, his hands shaking. "I can't involve the police," he repeated, a plea and a warning.
"Why?" I demanded.
The story came out in fragments. Michael's past wasn't clean. Years ago, before Sophie, before his attempts at redemption, he'd been involved with some dangerous people. Gambling debts. Money laundering. Small-time stuff that never quite went away.
"These people," he said, his voice breaking, "they know things. About me. About my past."
