If I was going to create this new chapter in my life, I would be happy, and I would make sure my mother was happy as well. I took a deep breath as the flight continued. I brought out a book titled "Happiness is the Key" to avoid thinking about Earnest and our past. I couldn't focus Earnest filled my mind. I thought about the good times, the laughter, and the adventures we had shared. I thought about the way he made me feel, the way he looked at me with so much love in his eyes.

That's something he told me a long time ago, just after the twins started high school, and I was feeling old and frumpy. At thirty-four, I was far from it, but back then, I felt out of place and out of sorts, and my mind would give me no peace. Now three years later, I'm more sure of myself, more confident in this phase of my life, with just one niggling shadow of darkness that always seems to be there, hanging over me. The moments when she felt whole. She picked up her pen and began to write. I never thought I would be happy. I spent so long being scared. Scared of losing Silas. Scared of losing the apartment. Scared of losing myself. I did not think I deserved to be happy. But Ezra taught me that happiness is not something you earn. It is something you choose. Every day, I choose him.
