Ryder knocked on his office and before Kael could even answer Ryder got in with a smile. “Kael,” Ryder said, his voice steady and not unkind. “Can I talk to you about something?” Kael looked at him, arms crossed. “What.” Ryder hesitated. He hadn’t meant to be so direct, but he had to know. “I’m looking for a woman named Hazel,” he said softly, his pulse racing. “I—I heard she… she has special healing powers. I need— I need her help… My mother needs it more than so many people. Do you know where she is?”

She had rehearsed the conversation in her head a hundred times, but now, faced with the reality of confronting Alex about what she had seen, her confidence wavered.
