I told dad. “I don’t mind. I like driving you around.” Dad said. “You got a letter by the way. Reminds me of how your mother and I wrote each other letters.” “Were they romantic letters? Or like dirty letters?” I joked. “Don’t tell me if they were, because I don’t want to know that.”

But his chest rose and fell in a slow, steady rhythm. He was still alive. Barely. My feet moved before I could think about it, stopping a foot away from him. “What’d he tell you?” I asked Ronald without turning back. He ignored me, speaking to Mason instead. “What did you find out from the grandmother.” Ronald asked evenly. Something heavy pressed against my chest and for a moment, I couldn’t breathe. I turned to him. “That your father was deranged.” I spat. His face didn’t waver. Nothing.
