“I… I only wanted her to know the truth. Please, Helen… leave my family alone. I’ve done enough already…”
Helen tilted her head, her smile cold and precise. “You are not the threat I fear. You are a doorway, a channel through which chaos might slip. And I cannot afford that.”
With deliberate slowness, Helen reached into her bag and pulled out a tablet. She tapped the screen, and images appeared—Lenora’s husband restrained, bruised, bleeding, while Carter ensured he couldn’t escape. Lenora covered her mouth in horror.
“This,” Helen said softly, tilting the tablet, “is what happens when orders are ignored, when I am crossed.”
