They kept their distance, forming a wide circle around us, and their eyes were not on me.
They were on her.

She sat beside me, both her small hands wrapped around my right hand, her head drooping forward, her dark hair tangled and matted with sweat. She was so pale she looked translucent.
Dark purple shadows bruised the skin beneath her eyes. Her lips were chapped, bitten raw, and her breathing was shallow, fast, like a bird’s.
“Adele,” I rasped, and my voice worked better now. “Baby.”
She didn’t lift her head. But her fingers twitched against mine, weakly, and she whispered, “Mummy?”
