"I thought about bringing one of your romance novels," he said, cutting me off. "You know, to read as a bedtime story. The Highlander's Captive Bride seemed appropriate."
Even through the pain and exhaustion, I felt heat flood my face.
Or at least, I felt it try to. My face was too bruised and swollen to show much, but I knew my ears were flushing bright pink.
"You're terrible," I muttered.
"Maybe I'll bring one tomorrow," he said, and I could hear the smile in his voice. "We can find out if the highlander really does ravish the heroine in chapter three."
