A distant sound echoed from outside with the low, rolling groan of shifting stone. Verran stiffened. “The tremors again.” Kael turned toward the entrance, light flickering faintly around his shoulders. “No. That’s not the mountain. That’s something beneath it.” The fire sputtered. Frost crawled across the cavern walls, delicate veins of white spreading like spiderwebs. Aria felt it then and the unmistakable pressure of the Hollow rising, as though something massive stirred in the depths. She took a step forward, pulse quickening. “It’s calling.”

A heartbeat. The trail bent sharply, cutting around jagged spines of black rock. The Hollowed Teeth. That’s what the Watcher had called this place — and now it made sense. The formations resembled shattered jaws lifting from the mountain’s throat, serrated teeth ready to nip at the sky. They were midway through when the wind died. All at once. Not a slow quieting — a sudden stop. No sleet. No air. No sound.

Marek’s eyes shifted toward me again. “She leaves.” My heart stopped for half a second. “What?” “The Hollow wants her here,” Marek continued. “So we stop giving it what it wants.” “You want to use her as bait?” Dominic’s voice turned deadly quiet. “No.” Marek looked exhausted suddenly. “I want to move her before the mountain fully wakes up.” Theo’s expression sharpened instantly. “Wait.” He turned toward Marek slowly. “You said fully.” Marek didn’t answer. Theo stepped closer. “What happens when it fully wakes up?” Another another tremor rolled beneath the mountain and somewhere far below Blackridge, something howled back.

But until then she knew they were on their own. She had waited until the sick excuse of patrol warriors were on a different path. Since she wasn't a great fighter she knew to stay in the shadows. It was almost an hour out until she found the rocky terrain. That's when she got to work. Before long she had dug a huge hole of the rock that lead deep into the mountain. She had made sure there was another way out.

The echo of the horn lingered long after the sound itself had faded. It settled deep within the mountain, vibrating through the bedrock until every conversation in the camp died on its own. Snow continued to sweep across the valley in restless curtains, hissing over broken stone and abandoned tracks, but the ordinary sounds of winter suddenly felt small. Beneath them, something had awakened. Everyone could feel it. The Hollow Ones remained kneeling where they had fallen. None of them looked at one another. Their black eyes stayed fixed on the widening fracture with the exhausted dread of people forced to relive a nightmare they had once survived.

The trees themselves whispered in the wind, murmuring through their twisted boughs as if echoing a language older than the bones of the earth. Magic here was not spoken, but breathed, and tonight it grieved.

Moss clung to the enormous boulders, trees and scrub grew tall and wild, and the old hiking trail appeared hardly used. “We have to climb all the way up there?” I muttered, heart lurching at the sheer height of the mountain. Liam looked at the map and shook his head. “Nope. Just to about…” He pointed at a cliff alongside the mountain, cut in half by a raging waterfall. “There.” I gulped. “That still looks really fucking high up.” “Well, it’s either that or let ghosts take over your life,” Liam replied, giving me a meaningful look.

As the private jet took a sharp turn over the Swiss Alps, the moon cast a silver glow on the rugged, snow-covered mountains. The peaks looked like they had been cut with a jagged knife, their edges rough and unforgiving. I leaned my forehead against the chilly window, my breath misting up the glass as I gazed out at the breathtaking view. The mountains stretched out before me, their beauty almost surreal in the soft, lunar light.

The climb out of Hollowspire was harder than the fight itself. The tunnels were half-collapsed, the stone cracked from the silver’s fury. Dust drifted in clouds, clinging to their throats and hair. Every step echoed, hollow and sharp, as though the mountain itself was listening. Ava leaned on Silas’s arm more than once, her legs trembling, her chest raw from the weight she’d carried. Mara scouted ahead, picking paths where the stone hadn’t fully caved. Caleb and the wolves guarded the rear, ears flicking back at every distant rumble.

As soon as someone asked if I was a tourist, I didn't hesitate to say yes and here I was, lounging on a free bed, well not free, I had paid for it but it was more than I expected. We had truly underestimated this pack and for the first time in a few months, my heart trembled with fear.
