CHAPTER 23 Holly the Gift of Spirit – March 22, 2027 The funeral is small and wrong. Holly Rowan Holiday is laid out in the pack clearing under the cedar tree, wrapped in the same bomber jacket she wore the day she walked into first period like she owned the world. She’s seventeen. She should be opening presents, not lying on a stone slab with coins on her eyes and Elowene’s cedar shavings in her hair. Malik sits on the ground beside her, knees pulled to his chest, trumpet case clutched like it’s the only thing keeping him breathing.

"Oh. Okay. I'll be down soon." After a long time showering and an even longer time dressing up, Holly was convinced she could go downstairs. She was wearing a black v neck short sleeve belt short overall jumpsuit with buttons. She had never worn it before. But it made her look sexy and bold and she loved it. Arthur stood there, smiling, and next to him—Holly. My stomach dropped so fast I thought I might be sick. They were both smiling. Arthur's smile faded the second he saw me. Holly own didn't. Hers sharpened and turned into something smug. "Yvonne," Arthur said, like he had forgotten I was coming. "You're here." I couldn't speak, I couldn't move. Holly was wearing a pencil skirt and a silk blouse. Professional. Put-together. Like she had come from the office. At eight o'clock at night.

The distraction was enough. Tate rolled away as Heriberto's follow-up attack hit empty ground.
