Chokehold
“This place reeks.”
“There’s a cow paddock literally right next to us,” Hazel huffed, rolling her eyes. “In half a minute, all we’ll be able to smell is fire.”
“That’s not any better,” Max grumbled.
His insistence on complaining for the entire duration of the five minute walk was becoming overbearing, and it took everything in Hazel’s power not to shrug away his touch disdainfully. Instead, she sucked in a deep breath, cinching her fingers tighter around the lead in her hand. Coming up over the hill, she got her first glimpse at the crowd of people gathered around the glowing red pavers, stacked high to contain the fire. There were a few more people than she’d anticipated. Butterflies swirle
