PAST SELENE’S POV: Homecoming had come and gone in a blur. It was all a little too extravagant compared to the events at my old public school. Back there, I had thrown myself into everything—volunteering, showing up. I loved it, managing stressful events, dressing up, dancing to my heart’s desire. But here, I had not bothered. Partly because I couldn’t stomach the thought of looking pathetic, standing around a dance floor without a partner. But mostly because nothing in this place felt like mine yet.

Homecoming parade’s a big deal around here.” “So I see.” She pulled a small digital camera from her shoulder bag. “I’m ready.” He frowned as if in deep thought. “You going to write a book about it?” She hadn’t thought to but the idea wasn’t half-bad. “An article, maybe. Does that bother you?”

“Oh my God! Are you kidding me? Hayden Jenkins, the bookworm, and Jake Monroe? If you told me this ten years ago, I’d have died from laughter,” she chirps, her voice giving me the urge to vomit. “This is so much fun.” “What’s wrong with that?” Poppy intervenes, coming to my defense. I can almost hear her teeth grinding beside me, and I grab her by the elbow, trying to keep her from jumping down Bethany’s throat. “The bookworm dated the quarterback, and it wasn’t laughable, was it? If I remember correctly, she stole him from you.”
