The Way He Looked at Me
I’ve misread looks before, but this one feels heavy, loaded.
“Lost a bet,” I say curtly.
“Ah,” she murmurs, and that’s the end of it.
Outside, Bennett leans close, voice low and teasing. “There’s a place around the corner. They make a hot chocolate that’s basically molten chocolate. So rich the server looks at you like you’re insane and asks, ‘Are you sure?’”
“I didn’t know that,” I reply a little too quickly.
