If he had stepped onto the ice, his ankle would have snapped the moment he crossed the blue line.

"What the—" Vance gasped, lunging backward as a second and third spike tore through the soil, boxing his contractors into a corner of frozen earth.

Water dripped from his beard as he smiled at her. "Come in, Elskling." He swam toward the edge where he stood up, the water licking up his defined abdominal muscles, just hiding his desire. He pointed toward some alcoves chiseled out of the rock wall. "There are shelves there for your clothes if you want. And there are steps just there at the edge if you don't want to jump."

The seventh-grade Breakthrough Pill was a little tricky to crat, but Severin was familiar with it because he had just recently prepared a batch. The maintenance machine driver killed the engine and it resulted in a heavy and immediate silence. The figure in the maintenance uniform slowly raised his head and I saw Ethan's face in the light reflex. He had been watching us.
