“You are going to bleed to death if you don’t stop being so stubborn.” I opened my mouth to respond to his words but I couldn’t speak because I had to fight to steady myself and keep the darkness that suddenly gathered in my eyes. Blinking and shaking my head didn’t help, it only made me feel dizzier. I didn’t know when I started falling but I knew when he caught and after that, nothing.

When the car stopped, they slowly removed the black handkerchief that they had placed over my eyes. "Shit! Look at what you did to me, my vision is blurry, you animals!" I just wanted some help, but now I had gone ahead and kicked myself in the arse. And what made it even worse, was the fact that my blurred vision was slowly but surely being obstructed by tiny black dots. I did not need to take a guess to know that it would only be a matter of time before I passed out, before I would no longer be able to do anything to help myself. “Stop watching. Focus on the road. If you crash, we’re no fucking use to either of them.” I want to yell at him. I want to scream that I need to see what’s happening. But he’s right. If we don’t get there, if we wrap this car around a pole because I couldn’t stop looking for two seconds, we’re just bodies in a wreck instead of help.

Cold means I’m moving. My foot finds the narrow ledge I memorized weeks ago. Then another. Pain flares through my ribs, bright and blinding. I choke on a sound but swallow it back, pressing my forehead against the stone until the stars fade from my vision. Don’t stop. I learned that lesson young. Stopping is how they catch you.
