I was driving blind. My hands, gripping the steering wheel, were slick with sweat. Every instinct screamed at me to pull over, to stop, but Anya's words echoed in my head. Don't stop for anything or anyone. To stop was to fail. I slowed to a crawl, squinting, my whole body tense, searching for the ghost of the road ahead. It was one thing to be staring right at danger, but it was an entirely different ballgame when you were completely helpless. Maybe if I wasn't being held down by these girls, I would be able to fight at least one of them. “Say goodnight, dear.” The third girl's grip on my jaw tightened one more time . I watched my life flash before my eyes. I didn't need the world's largest IQ to know that sulfuric acid was going to ruin my eyesight, and once that was ruined, I could as well kiss my life goodbye. “What do you mean I can't use my blood on her?” “Well,” Natasha seemed to sit on the other chair across from us. “If you use your blood on her eyes, it will damage it completely and she might become blind.” Her words made us freeze. My vision was still a mess without the glasses, making everything feel slightly off-balance. Part of me wanted to tell her the truth right there, that I couldn’t see her properly, that I’d broken them last night during the fight with the intruder, and that I was waiting for a new pair tomorrow. But another part, the awkward, scared part, kept me quiet. I didn’t want to seem even more helpless in front of her. The bus stop was noisy around us, people moving past in blurry shapes. I shifted my weight from one foot to the other, heart beating faster than normal.
