I was driving blind. My hands, gripping the steering wheel, were slick with sweat. Every instinct screamed at me to pull over, to stop, but Anya's words echoed in my head. Don't stop for anything or anyone. To stop was to fail. I slowed to a crawl, squinting, my whole body tense, searching for the ghost of the road ahead. The classical music on the radio had been replaced by a frantic, urgent news bulletin, the words a jumble of syllables I couldn't parse.

I can't say a word, and everything is a blur before I know it all I can see is black. ***

“Thank you. Will I still see you again?” He shrugged. “I would probably bother other people and see if they will listen,” He looked at me. “Close your eyes, my child. You have to go back. Just remember, when you feel like everything is blinding, just look at the sky.” I nodded, smiled at him, and then closed my eyes. ---

It was one thing to be staring right at danger, but it was an entirely different ballgame when you were completely helpless. Maybe if I wasn't being held down by these girls, I would be able to fight at least one of them. “Say goodnight, dear.” The third girl's grip on my jaw tightened one more time . I watched my life flash before my eyes. I didn't need the world's largest IQ to know that sulfuric acid was going to ruin my eyesight, and once that was ruined, I could as well kiss my life goodbye. I as already wolfless, was the moon goddess really going to let me get blind?

Until the words from his mouth progressed, he could not simply stop. His vision went obscured. Everything went dark.

My vision blurred, eyes filled with water, face wet with tears, scrambled noises escaping my lips. “I feel your pain. People don’t and they never will. They don’t know what we go through. They’ll talk. But, I know the black shadows that surround you. Whatever you go through, don’t listen to them. Don’t burden yourself. One step. That’s all. One step a day. Nothing more.”

“What do you mean I can't use my blood on her?” “Well,” Natasha seemed to sit on the other chair across from us. “If you use your blood on her eyes, it will damage it completely and she might become blind.” Her words made us freeze. She continued. “Her eyes were in their sensitive phrase right now and it cannot be hit by the sun or anything—not even be poked accidentally because it can cause permanent blindness.” I heard her let out a sigh. “That's why you have to protect your eyes at this phrase. The cloth I used to blindfold your eyes—don't take it off, not even if you would take a bath or shower.”

That small compliment felt bigger than it probably should have. I scratched the back of my head again, trying to find the right words. My vision was still a mess without the glasses, making everything feel slightly off-balance. Part of me wanted to tell her the truth right there, that I couldn’t see her properly, that I’d broken them last night during the fight with the intruder, and that I was waiting for a new pair tomorrow. But another part, the awkward, scared part, kept me quiet. I didn’t want to seem even more helpless in front of her. The bus stop was noisy around us, people moving past in blurry shapes. I shifted my weight from one foot to the other, heart beating faster than normal.

Vision white. I collapse, utterly ruined. “Red for stop, and Amber for slow…” The safe words, That stupid goddamn code.It pops into my head now? Now? When I’m already past saving.
