The group piled out of the RV and settled on the icy trail. "What now?" Zander asked. "Now we ask for permission to enter," Isis explained. "Permission from whom?" Zander questioned. "From me." The ground shook, sending Zander and the others falling to the grate. Burrowed from beneath the snowy earth rose a white serpent with yellow eyes. His skin is thicker than leather. He stood on his tail, towering over them. "A fucking talking snake!" Carson yelped. "I am Salim, the snow serpent who guards the entrance to Serpents Valley. Who is in charge?"

“It’s going to take a while to get used to that.” After a beat of silence, I mutter, "Why is he so cold?” “You mean Drogo?” I nod slowly, staring at him. “I know he is a lot for any sane person to handle. He is cold, detached, ruthless. He has always been like that ever since I met him, but I can assure you that is not all he is.” “Is he really immortal? Why is he cursed?” “Long story, Isolde. She didn’t care much for mortal affairs beyond what her job required her to know. Lisa circled over the building and landed gently on the roof. “Fuck, Isabella.” My attention went to the snake. While I’d only seen its tail, I could now follow the creature wrapped around Em’s arm over his muscular bicep and over his shoulder. I knew lots of immortals had served in wars. There have always been a few humans who knew about us and were willing to make use of our special abilities. Most immortals were given special assignments rather than serving in the trenches since they couldn't afford to have humans see them regenerate if they were wounded.
