The Actor's Contract
Damion and Mel should have been back by now.
“Guys, why is Damion taking so long?” I ask.
The words hang there, thin and brittle. No one says it, but the shift is instant. Like someone flipped a switch. The room hasn’t changed — only us.
Time is the quiet traitor. It moves while we’re distracted, while we’re laughing, while we assume everything is fine. But we finally notice how much time has passed, and worry settles in fast and heavy, with nowhere to go.
And we realize — too late — that we should have noticed sooner.
