That left just the three of us in the big suburban McMansion: me, my stepbrother Kyle, and her boyfriend Jake. Jake had been coming over for months now. Kiara’s lips pursed as Jake tried to ease the crackling heaviness between us. “Oh, well, I will let you guys sort this out,” he said and bent down low to whisper something in her ear, kissing her temple. He offered me a smile before walking away and leaving the two of us alone in the middle of the crowded hall.
