I glanced at him, then back at Christopher, and let the silence linger for another moment before I added, “I could read to you, just to help.” He didn’t respond, but Felix wagged his tail. I took that as a yes. I crossed the room quietly, stepping towards the bookshelf. My fingers traced over the spines until they landed on a small, paperback volume with gold-stamped lettering. I read quietly, “Jane Eyre” Perfect, I hoped. I returned to the chair diagonal from his, sank into the cushion, and opened to the first page. And as I began to read, the room softened, not entirely, but enough.

He follows it up with silk hand gloves which he drops on my palms. Quietly, I follow his orders, taking care not to rip the hand gloves with my hastiness. "You can open it now." He pronounces. "You can't get much cleaner than that." With shaky hands, I skim the hand cover of the book, running my fingers through it and feeling the hard leather beneath my tips. Maybe it’s because I want to check out this picture, but watching him is like watching grass grow; he is that slow. Finally, I flip the picture over. She’s gorgeous. Not at all what I expected. I’m not sure exactly what I expected but it wasn't this. She has long dark hair that frames a perfectly symmetrical face and huge amber eyes that would look amazing gazing up at me while she was on her knees. Sorry, I mean eyes that seem to smile, even through the cheap photo paper I’m holding. Yes, that is more gentlemanly, right?

I knew who it was from the second I saw it, my heart did a traitorous flip as I carried it upstairs, glancing over my shoulder like Mirabel might appear at any moment. I slipped into our room, locked the door, and tore it open on my bed. Inside was a small wooden box. Nestled in velvet lay a rare first-edition copy of Jane Eyre, the cover worn but beautiful, it pages edged in gold. My breath caught. I’d mentioned it once during the holidays, of how it was my ultimate book boyfriend fantasy in physical form. Rhys had remembered. I opened it carefully. Tucked inside the front cover was a handwritten note on heavy cream paper, his strong, decisive script unmistakable.

Her father is hardly ever home, working long hours in the city while her mother spends most of her time grading papers from all of her high school students. It's been three days since she started delaying the inevitable event of being stuck with Dom in Canterbury. After minutes of pondering, she stood up and reached the small shelf of books she has. Her eyes locked on two books, Jane Eyre by Emily Bronte and Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. She had just finished reading Persuasion, and she was still on the assessment of her feelings towards the ending of the story. Maybe another book can take her mind off things. She decided on Great Expectations, gladly picking up the book and bouncing back to her bed, to enjoy another pleasurable surmount of reading a book.

I began to question the sense in even coming here in the first place. I didn’t know what I had hoped to find and Chloe was right; it was reckless. And I couldn’t afford to be reckless, especially not now. I was about to sink a little into despair when Jane called out. “Look I found something.” She held up a little black book that was almost identical to the one I found in my father’s study. There was only more gibberish inside. Both of us froze instantly as if in sync. There were sounds of footsteps coming from the front porch.
