I went into the library in search of a book to read; one I selected was a romance fantasy novel. I took a seat at the far end of the library, close to the window with the marvellous view of the garden. I started reading, getting lost in the world of fantasy, until I was disturbed by a knock on the door, and Josiane and Godiva came in with a tray in their hands. Because I was so immersed in what I was reading, I had totally forgotten it was lunchtime. I smiled at them, to which they returned as I dropped the book down.

Then I called Rose and asked her to bring me a glass of juice. She came in minutes later, smiling softly as she handed me the glass. I gave her a quiet thank you before turning back to my book. The pages pulled me in fast. It was a romance novel, and God—the tension in it was so high, I felt like I was living through every line. The characters were aching for each other, and I don’t know... maybe it was the way the words danced, or maybe it was just the loneliness creeping back in—but I found myself wishing I was the girl in the story.

Mira laughed at the jokes, nudging me with her elbow, but I could only manage faint smiles. My mind wandered back to Zayden, to the way his touch had once felt like safety, now tainted by blood.

When I read those few lines, I felt a chill spread through my entire body. My fingers were trembling in indignance.
