The ground seemed to shift underneath me when I saw my husband on top of another woman, on our bed, the same bed he wouldn't even hold me on. I put my hand over my mouth and walked in, each step heavier than the last. He was breathing unevenly as he moved faster in and out of her. The woman was moaning and dipping her nails into his back. That must hurt, but Nicholas didn't seem to care. My chest tightened painfully that I wished I hadn't walked in that door, more painful from being jealous of this woman. Nicholas was so lost in pleasure that he didn't even notice me coming in. He probably won't know if the world is crumbling right now.

She threw herself into Giselle’s arms, sobbing and pointing back toward the dark window where a tall, thin shadow was standing against the moon. "He is right there behind the glass and he is whispering my name in a way that makes my blood turn into ice inside my very veins. Please do not let him take me back to that place where the sun never shines and where everyone is a slave to his terrible hunger for power," Jillian cried. She hid her face in Giselle’s neck, her whole body trembling with a terror that made the Queen growl deep in her throat with a sound of pure protection.

I would rather die with a taunt on my lips than give my enemies the satisfaction of seeing me break. “Enough.” Dr Moreau’s voice cut through the haze. “You’re going to kill her before we’ve even started.” Jillian stepped back, breathing hard. She looked half-mad, her hollow eyes blazing with something that wasn’t quite satisfaction. “She won’t stop talking,” Jillian panted. “She’s fucking insane.” So she wanted my fear and trembling? Too bad she wasn’t getting it.

I thought they would have run the moment they saw I’d found my wolf. As I stand outside the house I once lived in; dread fills me. My nerve endings are shaking. Jace POV I stood outside on a porch roof near a window and peered into the darkened room. My huntress was fast asleep. Max still had my blood in her system, and because of this, I could find her wherever she went. But I doubted I’d have that ability for much longer. I could feel her slipping away with each passing day as my blood slowly disappeared from her body. I wanted to haul her back to my house for protection, but I knew she’d never forgive me for doing that. Max seemed to value her freedom, so watching her from afar would be enough for now.

"It got left there." Riley looked at the book. Then at him. Then at me. She was not convinced. I could see it clearly — the thing behind her eyes that was still running calculations, still pulling at the thread. But Daisy was pulling at her sleeve now, asking if she wanted to see the puzzle she had been working on, and the room had too many witnesses for Riley to push further in any direction that mattered.
