“I should go in alone,” I suggested.
He nodded. “Alright. I’ll head back and clean up quickly.”
I wrapped my arms around him. He kissed my forehead gently before turning away. I watched him disappear into the trees before continuing forward.
The castle gates stood tall and grim, the grotesque monkey statues guarding them still as stone, their eyes seeming to follow me. I scrunched my nose at them, poked out my lips, and rolled my eyes.
Inside, the castle was already bustling, servants shuffling about, chores in full swing. Whether a spy reported to Xareth or Nyra, I honestly didn’t care, not now.
