Eliza suddenly screamed. Beside the dead man's body, a small boy burst out from the shadows and clung tightly to the armored vehicle's door. "Take me with you, miss. Please—take me with you!" His eyes were dark and feral, completely devoid of grief over his father's death, more like a wolf cub than a child. Only kids who had survived in the radiation zone by feeding on corpses ever looked like that. Their humanity had long since been worn away.

"But when I found out you were planning to sacrifice our pup to be a scapegoat for that whore Sarah…" I leaned in close, my voice a whisper only he could hear. "I would rather kill him with my own hands," I said, my voice utterly devoid of warmth, "than let him become a pawn in your disgusting game." "You… you're a monster…" Lucas's lips were white, his body shaking uncontrollably. He finally understood what he had lost. It wasn't for Sarah. It wasn't for the greater good.
