I knelt. The floor grated under my knees; the wood was cool through my robe. I bowed my head until my forehead kissed the planked floor and kept it there. The posture was total surrender—no pride, no posture left to hide behind—because this was not a bargaining of titles or lands. This was something small and brutal: the asking of a favor that might cost me everything.

"Kneel beside me." My heart gave a violent, sudden leap against my ribs. The command struck straight at the core of my submission, a direct request for me to take the lowest, most vulnerable position in the room. He settled into it and spread his legs apart. He glanced at his older brother, then looked to the girl in front of him. "Kneel." He ordered.

“Leave him.” Hayden shifted his gaze from me, moved a little closer to the man, and said, almost giving him a heart attack with his angry gaze “You don’t know who the fuck I am but I know you and everyone related to you. If you want to have a peaceful life and want everyone around you to live peacefully KNEEL.” “What…” I looked at Hayden. The man immediately knelt before me and I stepped back, shocked. I put my palms on my mouth as he said “I’m sorry.”

His hand slid up my arm, fingers wrapping around my throat. “That you are mine to command.” A shudder ran through me. “I…” I swallowed. “I understand.” “No.” His voice hardened. “You don’t. Not yet.” He guided me forward until I stood before the chair. “Kneel.” I froze.
