The eastern wing of the Blackwood estate was noticeably warmer than the rest of the castle, heated by expensive, imported charcoal that Lane had purchased from the southern merchant guilds. As she walked down the long, arched corridor, the heavy fabric of her dark green dress swept against the floor, the only sound accompanying her steady, unhurried footsteps.
Up ahead, near the linen closets, a group of three young pack maids were huddled together, their heads bent in whispered, frantic gossip.
