The room swelled with the sound of polite warfare: compliments wielded like blades, laughter that arrived with receipts.

A gold ring flashed at his knuckle; a thin cigar waited unlit between fingers that had learned to broadcast power without squeezing. His gaze found Sasha where it always did—in the first second he cared about anything besides himself—and softened briefly.
“You look like your mother,” he said, which in this house meant you are the most dangerous person here and I love you for it.
