”They get better because everyone here does their best to make them better. It’s a group effort.” Bernard shakes his head, “Yeah, everyone does their part, but look at that man over there, the one only you would go near because the blood on him scared everyone else away?” I don’t have to be reminded. I could see guts, and blood. Internal organs and so much blood. None of the other nurses could stand it. Most of them are female and while not all of them are squeamish at the sight of blood, I think even the strongest of them have a fear of the sight of suffering.

A woman across the hallway. A nurse, she seems Pale. Middle aged. Pretty, maybe. But that’s not what grabs me. It’s the way she’s staring at me. Not curious. Terrified. She freezes when I meet her eyes. Like prey caught mid-step. Just then, another nurse appears behind her, tapping her shoulder. She jumps. Startled. Clearly rattled. Nik notices her too.
