Not to be basic, but 2015 was a killer year for queer fiction. The title that dominated my circles was definitely 'The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet' by Becky Chambers. It's sci-fi, sure, but the core romance between Rosemary and Sissix is the warmest, most affirming slow-burn. They're both incredibly competent in their roles on the ship—Rosemary as a clerk with secrets, Sissix as the pilot. It's less about angst and more about building a life and found family, which was a breath of fresh air.
On the complete opposite end, 'The Abyss Surrounds Us' by Emily Skrutskie is a brutal, fantastic adventure. Cas is a sea monster trainer turned prisoner on a pirate ship, and her dynamic with the pirate captain, Swift, is all sharp edges and reluctant alliances. It's a survival story first, but the tension between them as they navigate a deadly world is electric. Both leads are stubborn, skilled, and forced to challenge everything they know.
