“But chin up.” I nodded faintly. I reached for my scarf and sunglasses again out of habit, fingers moving automatically. The scarf wrapped around my neck, light but protective. The sunglasses slid into place, shielding half my face from the world. Clara noticed. Her eyes flickered to the movement, to the practiced way I covered myself, but she didn’t comment. She only waited until I was ready. We stepped out together. The air outside felt warmer than I expected, sunlight spilling across the pavement and brushing against my covered face. It wasn’t harsh, just bright, indifferent to everything that had happened. The world hadn’t dimmed for me.

We came up to the top floor but didn’t stop, we went straight out through the front door. As we came outside, Gunner carefully put me down again. But as soon as my face was out of his protective hold, I had to shield my eyes from the bright sunlight. Two days in artificial lighting can mess with your eyes. I squinted and tried to blink away the brightness. Gunner took my hand and led me a few steps away from the front door when a shocked voice caught my attention.

I say. “Same here, man.” With that, the barrier opens and I’m allowed outside for the first time. As I step out into the late afternoon sunlight, I hear a muttered curse behind me and Casen follows us out before the barrier closes again. I stand there in the sunlight with my eyes closed, just basking in its warmth. I had no idea how much I would miss the feel of the sun on my skin until I wasn’t allowed to feel it.

“We agreed to go to the town center today! Why are you still in bed at twelve in the afternoon? We need to leave by one!” Her voice was accompanied by the sharp sound of curtains being pulled open. Sunlight poured into the room, making me groan in protest. I sat up, shielding my eyes. “Stephanie, do you really have to open the windows?” I muttered irritably. “Yes,” she replied with a mischievous grin. “Otherwise, you’d all sleep till sunset!” I didn’t argue, but as I glanced at the open window, a sense of unease washed over me. Ever since the incident, I had avoided looking outside. The sight of the world beyond my room had become a reminder of things I didn’t want to face.

I shake my head, "No, no nothing is wrong. But thank you...for your concern." I need to get out of the car. Staying in here, while everyone else leaves and gets their things would be very pretentious of me. The moment Sebastian gets out, I take a deep breath and absorb the nice, cool air of the Air Conditioned car before opening my door and stepping outside, and boy do I regret it.
