Her brows pinched together, and with a perfectly measured sigh, she said before Aaron, "Valerie, I'm only thinking about your future career."
She sounded kind, but every word rang false. I didn't want to believe the worst of her, but her performance was so polished, her concern so rehearsed, that sincerity was the last thing it conveyed.
Unfortunately, Aaron couldn't—or wouldn't—see it.
Then, as if suddenly recalling something, Lily feigned surprise. "Oh, right. Valerie, weren't you out with Cassian the day before yesterday? Is that why you're not taking work seriously anymore? Don't tell me you're planning to form a mate bond with him and become a full-time housewife?"
