“They’ll come,” Sig finishes grimly.
Claire’s hand finds mine again, fingers threading through like they’ve always belonged there. I squeeze back, anchoring myself.
We move.
The back door opens. Cold night air slides in. One by one, we file out, ghosts slipping back into the shadows. Lina gently takes one of the infants from the exhausted mother, murmuring reassurance without sound. The baby blinks, quiet for now.
We’re almost clear. Trees loom ahead, dark and welcoming.
