“Tiger lilies? So beautiful.” She tries to take a bite but her phone rings out loud, sending a shrill through the room. Louisa tries to get to her feet but her knee catches under a corner of the coffee table. Hooking it, she gives it a good push to free her knee but the cake lifts on one side. She leans forward to gain balance, but the edge of her hand comes down on the rim of the cake plate. Kingsley watches in horror as the cake flips up and then….. splats! On his shirt.

Raina asked, her eyes lighting up as she practically bounced on the mattress. "I did," Nathan said with absolute corporate seriousness. He set the clipboard down and opened the bakery box, revealing four beautifully sculpted miniature cakes. "The pastry chef from Upper East Bakers sent over the prototypes for the... monster cake." "It’s a dragon!" Raina corrected loudly, pointing at a tiny green frosting wing. "A chocolate dragon!"

“I know this might be sudden, but… I just wanted to congratulate you properly.” Ava stared at the roses, her expression subtly changing. She didn’t hate them. But she didn’t want them either. The topping is what caught my attention. The cakes are topped with blobs of cream, small light-pink meringues, baby pink and white macarons, fresh strawberries, white chocolate truffles, and fresh, delicate flowers. "Oh my, that is such a beautiful cake! Thank you!" I say, in awe of the cake that looks like an artwork. "Oh, sure babe! We wanted to make today special for you." Alexia winks at me. "Does anyone have a lighter?" Akham asks. "No, cause yall made me fucking quit smoking… but I bet if you Googled that question… you'll get a few matches… get it.. matches!" Ashton laughs at his own cheesy joke.

Everything else is dinner. The cake is exactly what I wanted. Three tiers, brown butter sponge, mascarpone cream, a thin layer of bitter orange between each tier. Simple exterior, no piping, just texture and fresh figs on top. Celeste would approve.
