Alexandria’s POV I woke up thinking about his face. Not strategically, not turning it over looking for the angle in it. Just — his face, the way it had been on the living room floor, every layer gone. I lay in the early morning and held the image of it and let myself feel what I felt about it without immediately filing it somewhere manageable. What I felt was something close to love.

I couldn’t handle Xavier’s golden eyes tracking me across every room, and the way my body reacted when he was near made no sense, but it sure as hell wasn't helping my case. Practice is starting to feel like a warzone of tension while I was trying to survive the actual war happening in my real life. My love for the game was slowly being morphed into duty and I didn't want to lose one of the few times I actually liked in life. Basketball was quite literally all I had. I was going to cut out anything that wasn’t essential for my survival for the next few weeks. Basketball had to go and so did Xavier Volkov. Suddenly the memories shift, and I see myself dragging a sobbing Giselle out of our house. A sharp pain stabs at my chest as shame washes over me. The way I treated her... the cruelty in my actions… she never deserved any of it. I squeeze my eyes shut, trying to block out the image of the man I became—the man who broke the woman he was supposed to love more than anything. I did not want to keep looking at it. I walked over to the window. Outside the street was mostly empty. A couple walked by laughing about something. One of them nudged the other on the shoulder. It looked so easy. I turned away from the window. Basketball used to feel like the hardest thing in my life. All those early practices and conditioning and playing hurt. But none of that compared to this. Loving someone you could not really have was wearing me out.

We glare at each other, both infuriated, with rough panting and chest moving up and down rapidly. I feel so embarrassed. After the initial rush of angry, now I want to cry. I’ve worked so hard to move pass Zack. But my life seems to be down in another shithole all over again. Why did he have to tempt me? Why did I let myself fall? Now he has seen through my heart, and I’ve fallen to a chess piece in his palm. My eyes become glossy. His rough breathing stops for one second, then I hear his low and hoarse voice, “…seriously?”

I said before I lowered my gun to the center table. I reached for a bottle of wine and swallowed it straight away. If only Levine hadn’t called me and said men were entering the mansion, I’m sure I might have killed my brother for what he did. Damn, I can feel the intense anger at me for what I’ve witnessed and it doesn’t want to get out of my mind. All I want to do now is go to my deceitful brother and punch him in the face, but fuck I can't since I know someone tried to kill Chloe.
