The Unfortunate Trilogy
Lightning struck.
Thunder followed two heartbeats later.
Kade squinted through the rain. More lightning lit up the earth, and then the world fell dark. His breath left him in heavy gasps. In the distance, thunder rumbled, rolling through the clouds like a wave, growing louder and louder. At the height of it, the unmistakable sound of a gunshot pierced the air, then is carried away on the tail-end of an echo of thunder. Kade froze. His heart felt as if it had stopped. He stared into the thicket, the storm no longer frightening him, the rain no longer hindering his vision.
