Her friend had a soft, warm glow, with a faint, uncharacteristic flush on her cheeks that hadn't been there this morning.
"Mia?" she asked, her voice small and curious.
"Yeah?"
"Something happened today," Lauren said, a tiny spark of life breaking through her grief. "You have this... look. You’re smiling. Or you were, before you saw me. And you’re definitely blushing. You never blush."
Mia immediately sat up straighter, smoothing her blazer and tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "I am not blushing. It’s the New York wind. It’s freezing out there, and I had to carry three bags of groceries."
