"Emily. Open the door." Silence. "Emily, please. Open the door or I’m using the master key," I said, my voice dropping into a low, desperate plea. A moment later, the lock clicked. The door swung open, and Emily stood there. She looked incredibly small, her eyes red and swimming with fresh tears, her hands trembling against her sides. She said, stepping away from the door and walking toward him with measured, deliberate steps. Her heels clicked against the bare floor like a countdown. "If you want the truth, if you truly want to fix what you broke, you have to be willing to go all the way. Even if it means destroying her completely." Carl stiffened. And it wasn't because he didn't understand the pain behind her words. He understood it better than he wanted to admit. He had seen Emily broken. He had seen her rebuild. He had watched from a distance as she turned her wounds into armor.

"Not a bit." For a moment, Emily looked like she had nothing to say but then she continued, "I don't understand. You've gone mad, I'll go talk to her so that she'll understand the reasons."
