“That will be the end of the conference” I don’t bother to wait as I also hasten out of the hall, I need to speak to that proud peacock lest he thinks he is some kind of demigod. I meet Malachi just before he enters his car and as soon as he sees me, the look on his face changes. “I need to talk to you” I demand. “I have to go home to my wife” Malachi responds, “she needs me” “Your wife?” I scoff, “you seem to be forgetting something, don’t you think?”

I spit out, “I am not your wife” Malachi does not say anything. He only gestures to his men and they immediately pull him out of the door. “What— Malachi suddenly picks me up and throws me over his shoulders gaining a shriek of horror from me. “What do you think you are doing?” I yell out, not minding the onlookers. “I changed my mind,” he answers, “we are getting married today”

I asked. "Then I die in the Awakening and Dada dies trying to save me. But at least we tried." I looked at Dante, who looked like someone had punched him in the gut. "Who is this person?" he asked Luna. "What does he want?" "His name is Malachi. He's over five hundred years old. And he wants to prevent the Awakening because he believes it will destroy the world." "Why does he think that?" "Because he's seen it before." Luna's eyes were sad. "Five hundred years ago, there was another prophesied child. Another wolf with combined bloodlines who underwent an Awakening. And that wolf destroyed three entire packs before they could be stopped."

His dominance and arrogance demanded it. But instead of his powerful and authoritative posture, Ariella shrank into the back of the chair, a look of terror in her eyes like a hunted animal. Malachi stood in the doorway, his feet fused to the marble floor as he watched helplessly the wound that gaped on her chest. Then he would wake up, covered in sweat, his throat strangled with silent screams. "Sounds like your daydream is actually a nightmare." Malachi stared at Hamilton cooly, at the flippant way that he'd brushed off his confession.

I tore through anyone who stood in my way, my only thought reaching Aliyah. And then, suddenly, there she was. Looking bruised and terrified, but alive. Our eyes met across the room, and for a moment, everything else fell away. "Alessandro," she whispered, her voice a mix of relief and... was that fear? Before I could reach her, a figure darted between us. Helena, her face twisted in a snarl of hatred. "You're too late, Alessandro," she spat. "She knows everything. About the mafia, about what you really are. Do you really think she'll want you now, knowing what a monster you truly are?"

“You’re saying… Emma?” Jacob’s voice dropped. “If Mesiac has chosen her as your mate, then yes. The Wrath may be in her.” “That’s not good enough. May isn’t enough. You want me to put a human in front of Sullivan based on a ‘maybe?’” “She’s not just human,” Jacob snapped. “She’s your Luna.” Noah turned away, fists clenched. Jacob stepped closer. “Do you remember the Kaldea ambush?” Noah frowned. “Not really.”

“I know you do.” That was the end of that conversation. Malachi at least had the decency to look slightly apologetic as he fell into step beside me on the path to the village. He was a few years younger than Jareth, lean and sharp-eyed, with an irreverence he mostly kept contained in Jareth’s presence and let out in small careful increments around me. He had opinions about the chickens. He had opinions about most things, delivered in the dry understated manner of a man who had learned that the best jokes were the ones that looked like straight-faced observations.

“I think I may have spoken out of turn, I apologise. Malachi will tell you when the time comes.” My heart drops. “That doesn’t bode well for me at all,” I say, shaking my head. “Forgive me for saying this, but what made you say something like that and make me doubt him?” Maleah’s eyes widen. “Oh, heavens no, that was not my intention!” she says, placing a hand on her chest, then she sighs. “I apologise, I didn’t know he hadn’t mentioned her yet. Malachi…had a mate before you and she rejected him for someone else.”

I said to them and I saw Richard look at Malachi. “Firstly, it is with sadness that I announce Malachi’s resignation as advisor to me and his decision to leave the pack,” I said. Suddenly the noise level in the room was so loud that I had to bang the gavel on the table for them to settle down. The pack had erupted at the news of Malachi’s departure and none of them liked it. “Malachi accepted a position with The Council yesterday morning and I’m sure you are just as proud as I am of him for achieving this great honor. Malachi will still live in Seward and attend our meetings when he’s available,” I said and declared the floor open.
