Just got to that chapter last night and wow, the tension is cranked way up. The main character, let's call her Lia, finally has to actually attend a big family dinner with both her husband and his older brother, the one she's drawn to. The whole scene is so awkward you could cut it with a knife—forced small talk, loaded glances across the table. The husband is being his usual dismissive self, which makes the subtle, secretive kindness from the brother-in-law hit even harder. There's this moment where Lia drops her napkin and they both reach for it at the same time under the table. The description of that brief, accidental contact, with the husband completely oblivious and ranting about business, just about killed me.
It’s not a huge event-driven chapter, more about building that suffocating atmosphere and the silent communication between Lia and the brother-in-law. You see her starting to realize how trapped she feels in her marriage, and how this other man seems to actually see her. The chapter ends with her lying in bed, replaying that touch in her mind, hearing her husband snore beside her. It’s a quiet ending, but it sets a lot of internal conflict in motion.
