Lilac throttled down the street quickly to make it home to Grandma Chichi and her delicious evening meal. She hummed happily as her torn, oversized school bag bounced behind her, and she clutched her little brown teddy bear given to her by her brother.
Her brother had found the teddy bear in the landfill beside their tiny home and fixed it for her. It was her first toy, as Grandma Chichi couldn't afford to buy her any toys. They barely survived in their little shack of a home, and getting three square meals a day was hard.
Lilac was just a little girl, but she knew she loved her big brother more than anything, and he loved her even more.
"I will do anything to keep you smiling, little Lilly!" He had told her when he handed the stitched teddy bear to her.
Little Lily. That's what he called her.
"Thanks, big brother!" Lilac squealed excitedly, "I'll keep it for the rest of my life!" She clutched it tightly in her tiny hands and bounced around happily.
As Lilac walked home, her stomach rumbling in anticipation of her evening meal, one of the kids on the street hurled a pebble at her. She stumbled to the floor, her teddy bear falling out of her hands.
The kids surrounded her: three boys. "What do we have here?" One of them said with a smug grin on his face.
"I like your teddy bear," another said, snatching Lilac's teddy bear from the floor.
"No!" Lilac cried. "It's mine."
"Not anymore!" he tucked it into his pocket. Lilac got up to snatch it back, but a boy grabbed her by her head and pushed her back, making her fall and cry.
Suddenly, Lilac felt a shadow behind her, and the boys looked shocked, like they had just seen a ghost. They froze to the spot like they couldn't flee. Lilac wiped her tears and turned around. It was Big Brother behind her.
"Give it back." His cold eyes blazed on the boys like he could gulp them whole at once
With shaken hands, the boy who stuffed the teddy bear in his pocket pulled it out and handed it over to Big Brother.
"We are sorry, Big Brother!" They bowed and bowed, apologising, their legs shaking like they could buckle and fall apart any moment.
Everyone called him big brother on the street, and no one messed with his little sister.
"I won't be accepting any apologies next time." He spat. "Now get out of here!" He barked, making them jolt like toads, running off for their lives.
"Big brother!" Lilac squealed, giving him a hug. He lowered himself to tie her shoe lace and rose back up. "There, there,"
He carried her, so her legs balanced on both sides of his shoulder, while he hurled her backpack behind him. "Those guys deserve a good spanking. They are lucky I'm in a hurry."
"What's for dinner, big brother?!"
"Your favourite. Chicken bone soup with stale bread." He said with a smile
"Yayyy!" Lilac squealed as she pulled at his wavy, dark hair.
"Ouch! Don't pull too hard!" He chuckled as they headed home.
"Horse! Horse! Horse! Run! Run! Fast!" Lilac cackled with joy. Big Brother joined in the laughter.
"You want fast?! Alright then!" Suddenly, he jolted forward with full speed, running. Lilac squealed with excitement as she bounced on his shoulder, enjoying the breeze that blew on her face while everything zoomed into a blur around them.
Suddenly, he stopped when they noticed heavy smoke in the distance. Their house. It was on fire!
Lilac screamed in fright, but Big Brother jolted forward.
"Grandma Chichi is in there!" He cried. Lilac clutched him tighter, and as they got closer and closer, they saw armed men had surrounded the house. In the murky shadows, a figure in a crimson furry robe stood with the armed men.
Lilac squinted her eyes to make up who this person was, but couldn't see their face. They had their back turned to the burning house. Big brother carefully let her down to the ground, and for the first time in her life, Lilac saw tears in his eyes.
"Are you okay, big brother?"
He quickly wiped his tears and nodded quickly. "I think Grandma Chichi is still in there. She had a little escape room in case of an emergency. Listen Lilac. You have to find her and escape."
"What about you, big brother?" Lilac was beginning to feel fear now. Big Brother had never left her behind for anything. She always came along with him.
Why do they have to separate now?!
Tears simmer in her eyes.
"I have to distract these men before they get to her. I'll be okay."
"No, you can't, Big Brother! They are dangerous!" Lilac shook her head, refusing to let go of her big brother.
"Big brother is always going to do anything to keep a smile on your face, Lilac. I'll be okay." He handed her the teddy bear and bolted out of their hiding place into the scene. All Lilac saw was the armed men suddenly turning around. Their gun pointed towards Big Brother.
Big Brother stopped and turned to Lilac's hiding spot. He nodded at her. A nod that says. "Now, Lilac. Run!"
Lilac sprang out of the shrubs, going to their hiding place where Grandma Chichi would probably have escaped. Tears blurred her eyes, but she kept running and running, not looking back once.
Then, a blast escaped through the fields!
Shaking Lilac up, she collapsed on the floor.
It's a gunshot.
No, two!
Three gunshots!
"Big Brother!!!" Lilac screeched and jolted backward.
She got to where he had left, and the next sight crushed her to her core. Big Brother was on the floor, unconscious? Dead? Surrounded by those armed men, pointing their guns at him. The figure in the red fur coat stepped forward.
Lilac couldn't see their face. She couldn't tell whether they were male or female. She only stood there, shaken, her eyes blurred with tears, her body jittering like she had been electrocuted.
"Big brother!" She screeched, and suddenly someone cupped her mouth with their palm, pulling her into the shrubs before those men could hear her.
It was Grandma Chichi! She was running, her palm still over Lilac's mouth while she hurled Lilac by her side like a sack of salt, tears streaming down both their eyes.
They ran to the es
cape route before the harmed men could reach them.
Big brother's name wasn't Kaleb. His name was Jonathan Carter. We were foster children registered under Grandma Chichi Carter's name. She took Jonathan in first, and then they found me in the same landfill where they found my teddy bear. Grandma Chichi said big brother was busy scavenging when he found me.He was the one who found me.We've been inseparable ever since. He and Grandma Chichi practically raised me as a child to the woman I am today. And now he doesn't even remember anything about me? Not even my name? The wedding ceremony was short and secret. It was as if the Cross family avoided publicizing the marriage. There was no walking down the aisle, no tears, no flowers: Just me being surrounded by 10 members of the Cross family and Big Brother, who didn't even put any effort into dressing for the day. He still has the same black sweatshirts and joggers he wore the day before. He didn't look impressed with me. It made me want to cry. Big brother always looked at me with app
Lilac’s POVHe turns slightly to me, his face in a frown like I was a tick he couldn't wait to crush."Big brother!" I cried out again and lunged at him. "It can't be!" Tears streamed down my face, and I tied myself to his torso in a tight hug. "It can't be!"I hugged him tight, refusing to let go.My big brother! After all these years, I thought he was dead. I thought he was killed by those men! "What is wrong with you?!" His icy tone pierced through me. "Have you no restraint?!" He said, pushing me off. I escaped his grasp for a moment, but hugged him back."Big brother, I will never let go this time. I promise. I won't let you go!"He pfted irritatedly and pushed me away with force, making me stumble to the ground, confused. "Are you out of your mind?!" He scolded, dusting himself like a wave of sand had blown on him.I looked up at him, even more confused. Why is he cold to me? Doesn't he remember me, his sister? Have I grown so big? "Big broth…""Don't call me that!" He lashed w
The morning air cooled my skin as I entered the Cross family's private jet. I had signed the contract already and wasn't given enough time to pack my stuff. There was not much to park, anyway. My work barely paid me enough to buy the nicest clothes or jewellery for myself. I was alone in the private ride, and it felt super cool.According to Gracie, now that the agreement is signed, I'll present myself to Kaleb in his mansion uptown. After that, we will proceed with the marriage union. The thought of it momentarily makes me nervous. The fact that I'm meant to be nothing to Kaleb, yet be his wife. As the plane took off, I went through the conditions of the contract I had already signed just to be sure what I was up against. Everything was direct and straight to the point.Summarizing the contract in my own words: Be Invisible because Kaleb will Hate you, and if he treats you like Trash, take it with Arms Open Wide.I clenched my fist. It's just nine months. *SighMy thoughts drifted
Years later.Lilac's POV"You have a chance to sleep with me, and you're refusing?"My boss growled at me. I stood still, clutching my hands tight, hoping this meeting would end. When I walked into the office this morning, and my co-worker told me Mr Wilson, my boss, wanted to see me immediately, I knew I was in for some deep trouble. "I'm just not interested in you, sir!"Ops, that was too blunt.I quickly cleared my throat. "It's not professional, sir." I corrected myself. My gaze locked onto the floor. Mr Wilson lay back on his chair. A spiteful chuckle escaped his lips. "You're pathetic, Lilac. Do you know how many girls are hurling themselves over me?""I don't think I'm capable of doing such, sir." I spat again.God! Why am I so direct?I pressed my lips together. "I think my talents should be enough for my promotion, sir."Silence.I could tug at his heartstrings, if he has any. Who won't want to pity an orphan like me?"I really need this, sir." I pleaded. "It's been months
