His voice pulsates in excitement. At once a man appears in front of him out of no where, as soon as Benjamin opens the gates of the haunted house. "Do not go there. It is just an illusion." A man in a long coat with no limbs flying in air appeared in front of him. "It is the evil spirit which is calling you." He warned him. But Benjamin did not care for his words. On a trance he continued to walk ahead towards the mansion. "Our phones are dead. I need to call somebody for help. My wife is laying there unconscious." He points to his broken car.

It wasn’t until we passed about five of the cottages did I realize where we were going. “Wait, why?” I stuttered as I saw Alastor, Harriet, Heather, Damian, Iris, my mom, my dad, Alaric, Brigid, and other people standing outside Hodges and Matt’s cabin. “We all decided that it is a bad omen and should be removed from our town.” Orion squeezed my hand. “What about Matt?” I asked as I looked around at the faces. “He’s here.” Right as the words left Orion’s lips, Matt and Pru walked out of the front door. Matt had a duffle bag thrown over his shoulder and carried a couple of boxes. Pru followed behind him, holding a box.

"I don't have time for a negotiation, Matthew." Caleb's voice. It was thin. Papery. Like he was talking through a throat full of glass. I stepped onto the gravel roof, ducking behind the massive HVAC vents. The wind whipped my hair across my face. It tasted like rain and salt. I pulled my phone out. Hit record. Caleb was leaning against the edge of the roof. He looked like a ghost in a hospital gown. His shoulder was soaked red. His face was gray. Standing ten feet away from him, draped in a charcoal overcoat that probably cost more than my father’s first house, was Matthew Collins.

Campbell was still talking when a message entered her phone and after reading it, she decided to order them out. "That was my cue to send you both out and prepare the corpse." She explained, gesturing at the CCTV camera with her eyes. Katherine bit her lower lip as she tried to conceal the anger that was burning her chest. "I will get a warrant for your boss to be questioned. You can't send this corpse anywhere yet. We must find out what happened to the missing part." She instructed but Dr. Campbell just smiled. "That won't help since the owner of the corpse has no problem with it. Detective, I only called you because you wanted me to keep you updated not because you can do anything about it

But I was not alone. That afternoon, I did something I never thought I would do. I looked for Matthew. Damon was in his study. He did not know what I was doing. He thought I was reading. I was not reading. I was on my phone, scrolling through old records, old articles, old photos. It took me three hours. Matthew Hales. Born twenty three years ago. Last known address in Seattle, Washington. He went to college. Got a degree in engineering. He worked for a tech company. He had a girlfriend. Her name was Emily.

My hand hovered over the block button when the next text came in. “Six years ago. March 15th. Threston, Rhode Island." My blood ran cold. March 15th. The day Matt died. “How do you know that? Who are you?!!" I typed back frantically. Five minutes passed. Then another five. I bit my nails in frustration. “HELLO?!" I typed but another five minutes passed before a reply came in. “You need to leave Luca. Now." There was a vise tightening around my gut. A suspicion growing at the back of my mind. A suspicion I was desperately pushing down.

I can just imagine him lying on his bed reading a book or something. “Has anyone told you she’s missing, and they think she’s in there with you? But I know you wouldn’t lie to me and I know that your panicing about where she is right now,” Seconds later, the door opens. “She’s not here coach.” Matty says. I got hit in the face and got a scent. Cooper immediately recognized. “Mate.” My mate’s scent was coming from Matty’s bedroom. He goes to rush past us, but I grab hold of him by the throat, forcing him back into the room. “Where is she?” I say, pinning him to the door.

He stopped just short, close enough to smell the faint vanilla of her shampoo. “I know you can. That’s what scares me.” ⸻ The next morning, Callum was up before the sun, his boots crunching over frost-slick grass as he checked the perimeter. Nothing out of place. No fresh tracks. Still, the hair on the back of his neck stood on end. ⸻ He was pouring his second cup of coffee when his phone buzzed. A text from Mick over at the sheriff’s department: “Black pickup spotted again. Route 12 this time. Couldn’t get a plate.”
