The night before I left to return to Cambridge for the winter term, Javier surprised me with a candlelight dinner. He’d made his mother’s ropa vieja—a shredded pork dish, with white rice, black beans, and sweet plantains. “A real Miami meal,” he said with pride. “I don’t want you forgetting me.”
“As if I could,” I said, and kissed him. The pork wasn’t tender enough, and the rice was gummy, but I didn’t mind.
