"You worked for years to build this store, Mom! He cannot just take it away!"
"I will handle this," my mother said, stepping around her desk to wipe the tear from my cheek. "We are already tracking down the computer that posted those fake documents. I will be fine, I promise you."
She turned around, intending to walk toward her assistant to check the phone lines, but the moment she took a step, her body swayed. Her eyes rolled back, and her knees gave out beneath her.
"Mom!" I screamed.
Her assistant caught her right before she hit the floor, easing her down onto the rug. My mother lay there, pale and unconscious, exhausted from the stress she had been hiding behind her fake smile.
