The room erupted again. People couldn’t believe it. Neither could I. Margaret kept her eyes lowered as security escorted her toward the front. Xavier looked stunned. Genuinely stunned. Which immediately told me something important. He hadn’t expected this. Interesting. Very interesting. Margaret stopped near the stage. Alaric looked at her. She refused to meet his gaze. For a moment nobody spoke. Then Alaric broke the silence. “Margaret Pierce.” Her shoulders stiffened. “You accessed confidential personnel files.”

I said blankly looking around. She actually laughed and it was the kind of laugh that suggested she thought I’d just said something hilarious. “You? Buying property? In this neighborhood?” She turned to Margaret with a smile that was all teeth. “She’s Xavier’s wife. Well not really ex. She’s just someone he took in and she’s been living off him for the last five years.” Margaret’s expression shifted and I wasn’t a serious buyer in her eyes anymore. I was just some woman who’d been kept by a man and was now trying to pretend she had money.
