The skin darkened, collapsed, distorted. She wasn’t Lena anymore. She wasn’t anyone anymore. I didn’t cry. My gaze moved downward to her hand. On her right wrist, there was a tattoo. A small daisy. We got them together in our junior year. She chose a daisy. I chose a sunflower. She said the daisy meant hidden love. I said the sunflower meant always turning toward you. We both cried after it was done. And now, I looked at that daisy. It was still there on a body so ruined it no longer looked human.

“You’ll be okay soon. Try to relax. It’s okay.” In a daze, I trace my fingertips over the tattoos on his chest, studying them with hazy curiosity. My breathing slows, my heart rate calming. The sound of the hotel room’s ventilation is a distant hum in my ear, white noise that helps my mind settles. I tap Xander’s chest tattoo, the one in the shape of a dove over his heart. “What’s this one supposed to mean?” I ask, barely above a whisper. “To honor my mother,” he says. I’m surprised by his honesty.

Since I got that tattoo in memory of my mother, I decide to start with that. "They're Lisianthus'. They were my mother's favorites." She asks “Yes mom, sorry I was thinking of how much you love me. Ohhh… I got you a gift!” She cocked her head as I pulled out a couple dandelions from my pocket. “Aw, they are beautiful! Thank you, Damian.” She always loved flowers, especially when my dad brought them. She put a dandelion behind her ear before she put one behind my ear, tickling me to make me laugh.

"Hi. You're going to help with putting my dad away, right?" "I am." She looked just like her mother, blond hair and beautiful light skin. She wore baggy jeans and a tight white top with her hair let loosely down her back. "I hope you don't mind but I did do my research on you and I'm really glad my mom chose you to represent her." She smiled before hugging me and I hugged back. She looked down at my hand with the butterfly tattoo, "Pretty tattoo. Have any meaning to it?" "Well, you could say that."

My mother always taught me to be tender, and gentle like flowers while my father taught me to be sharp and dangerous like swords,” Alessandro tells Amber with closed eyes. “So, your father is the sword, and the flowers symbolize your mother,” Amber breathes into his chest. “Yes, Amber,” he kisses her head saying, “And now, you’re my flower.” She whispers, “And you’re my sword.”
