His gaze snapped up then, sharp and calculating. He studied me for what felt like an eternity, his eyes narrowing as if he were trying to see through me. The silence was suffocating, and I suddenly felt like I’d said too much.
Finally, he spoke, his voice laced with bitterness. “Vampires killed my friend,” he said bluntly. “She did what they wanted, helped them, and they still killed her. Now it’s the same vampires that want my help.”
I felt a pang of guilt, even though I had no idea who this friend was or what had happened. “Damien isn’t the same,” I said quickly, desperate to defend him. “He’s—he’s trying to stop—”
